| Does anyone have an opinion on whether or not repeating a grade in early elementary school is at all helpful to a dyslexic child- assuming the classroom is strong in phonics and generally supportive of special needs... |

From my experience, get an advocate, learn the language of special ed., reading programs, etc.
Don't waste time with retention if the school system is not providing the right, research based support. |

| The research on retention states it is generally not effective and in fact can be harmful for some students. |

| My son was retained in first grade because he struggled with reading. It did not help him and he did not learn to read from it. He was later diagnosed with dyslexia in third grade. We placed him in the Carroll School for 5th grade where he finally learned to read using the Orton-Gillingham method. |
